CRRC Sifang America Inc. has produced and delivered 10 7000-series passenger rail-car prototypes to the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA). The prototypes were manufactured at CRRC’s plant on Chicago’s southeast side. The company worked through numerous challenges and global supply chain issues caused by the COVID-19 pandemic to complete the rail-car delivery on schedule, said Marina Popovic, CRRC’s human resources director and chief legal counsel, in a press release.
In 2016, CTA awarded the contract to CRRC for 840 of the new 7000 series rail cars, which will replace about half of the agency’s current fleet. The prototypes were built using a majority of components sourced from U.S. suppliers, CRRC officials said. After prototype testing is completed, CRRC will transition into production of the next 400 7000-series rail cars, they said.
